Call for applications - Join the Industrial Optimization Group!

We have an open post-doctoral researcher position in the Industrial Optimization Group at the University of Jyvaskyla, Faculty of Information Technology. We invite applications as soon as possible. The position is filled from January 1, 2018 till August 31, 2019. The research is a part of the DESDEO project funded by the Academy of Finland which focuses on developing an open source software framework of interactive methods for multiobjective optimization. The post-doctoral researcher will be a member of the Industrial Optimization Group. The group is active in developing, implementing and applying multiobjective optimization methods. The group is also working on the thematic research field of the University of Jyvaskyla: Decision Analytics utilizing Causal Models and Multiobjective Optimization. The group is active and international, has a weekly seminar and regularly attracts research visitors.

The tasks include but are not limited to

  • developing new hybrid methods including elements of interactive and evolutionary methods. The aim is to combine strengths of different approaches in order to develop new, more efficient methods for computationally demanding problems. One can also further elaborate methods developed in the group and utilise machine learning tools.
  • considering scalarizing functions (used in interactive methods) as parts of evolutionary methods to speed up convergence, decrease amount of computation needed and increase computational efficiency. This requires new quality measures.
  • applying the methods developed in problems considered in the Industrial Optimization Group
  • writing scientific articles and implementing the methods developed and publishing them in the open source framework DESDEO.
A best matching candidate (in experience and interests) will be appointed. The candidate is expected to
  • take part in the activities of the Industrial Optimization Group and collaborate
  • have appropriate knowledge of multiobjective optimization and programming skills as well as written and spoken English
  • work vigorously and independently.
The work involves mobility, i.e. research visits.

Applicants must submit a motivation letter, curriculum vitae and a statement of current and future research plans relevant to the themes above. The full application, submitted as a PDF should not exceed 10 pages. In addition, contact information of persons knowledgeable with the applicant's research abilities must be provided.

Applications should be sent to Prof. Kaisa Miettinen, kaisa.miettinen at jyu.fi by the end of October 2017.
