1. PREFACE

In the year 1993 the main research areas of the Laboratory of Scientific Computing have been foundations of computational methods (including e.g. the finite element method, domain decomposition methods, nonsmooth and multiobjective optimization), computational mechanics and physics, control and identification and computational methods of large-scale systems. As pilot type projects research has been started in the areas of cellular and neural networks with applications in telecommunication.

The Laboratory of Scientific Computing actively participated in founding CASAT (Centre of Applied Science and Technology) in 1993. CASAT works under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and its aims are to do research of a high level and to improve cooperation between the university and business society environment.

The scientific work has been active: four conference proceedings have been prepared, two monographs have been under preparation and 54 other publications, including journal papers, conference proceedings papers, manuscripts and reports have been published. Moreover, 5 licentiate theses and one doctoral thesis have been completed. In addition 18 doctoral theses and 12 licentiate theses are under preparation .

The international collaboration grew up in 1993. We had 39 visitors and the members of the staff gave 20 presentations abroad in conferences and colloquia. We have 11 docents. Two of them come from the Helsinki University of Technology, one from VTT/Telecommunications and three from abroad. Moreover, professors Yu. A. Kuznetsov and J. Periaux were appointed as part-time foreign professors. Also professors V. Rivkind and M. Rudnicki continued their long-term stay. In 1993 among the doctoral and postdoctoral students were three foreigners. Two international conferences were organized. They were FEM 50 conference and NORTIM'93 meeting in the turn of August and September. It is worth men- tioning that PhLic Pasi Tarvainen received the Golub Price at the NORTIM'93 meeting.

Moreover, in the frame of the 3rd International Summer School in August four 30 hour courses in applied mathematics and computer science were organized. Lecturers were professors I. Lasiecka, K. McKinnon, K.-J. Witsch and H. Voss. Our research team has been accepted to the HCM programme Optimal Control and Applications for years 1993-1995. Other countries involved in the programme are Austria, France, Germany and Spain. The activity in other HCM programmes called Mathematics as Industrial Resource and in the ESF programme Mathematical Treatment of Free Boundary Problems has continued.

Our national sponsors have been the University of Jyväskylä, the Academy of Finland, TEKES (Technology Development Centre), Valmet Paper Machinery Inc., VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland) and some small enterprises as well as some research and cultural foundations.
