Several courses for undergraduate and graduate students were given in English. Four 30 hour high level courses in the area of applied mathematics were included in the 3rd International Summer School of the University of Jyväskylä. Prof. K.- J. Witsch lectured about functional analysis and elliptic boundary value problems and prof. H. Voss about iterative solution of large, linear systems. The subject of Dr. K. McKinnon was mixed integer programming and global optimization - modelling and methods and the title of prof. I. Lasiecka was optimal control of systems governed by partial differential equations.
Moreover, foreign visitors gave lectures. Prof. Yu. A. Kuznetsov lectured about matrix iterative methods in subspaces and their applications, prof. J. Haslinger about numerical methods for optimal control and prof. V. Rivkind about the theory of free boundary problems of Navier-Stokes equations.
