- Finnish Mathematicians Days, January 11-12 (with two special sessions on
teaching of mathematics and industrial mathematics)
- NORTIM'93 Meeting, August 30-31
- FEM 50 - The Finite Element Method: Fifty Years of the Courant Element,
International Conference on Scientific Computing, August 31 - September
There were 90 specialists on finite element techniques from Europe, America and
Asia at the FEM 50 conference. The invited lectures were given by O. Axelsson, I. Babuska, F. Brezzi, G.F. Carey, J. Douglas Jr., C. Johnson, K. Morgan,
L. Oganesjan, R. Rannacher, V. Thomee, O. Widlund and M. Zlàmal.
The main topics of the conference were: development of the theory of the finite
element method, computational aspects and applications in fluid flow, electromagnetism, material science, parallel computing, domain decomposition finite element
method and mesh generation. Moreover special emphasis was focussed to numerical methods for free boundary type problems (variational inequalities, contact
problems, computations of microstructure, flow through fissured media, etc.), parameter identification control of free boundary problems as well as optimal shape
design problems.
