1. PREFACE

In the year 1994, the main research areas in the Laboratory of Scientific Computing have been the foundations of computational methods (including, e.g., the finite element method, domain decomposition methods, multiobjective and nonsmooth optimization), computational mechanics and physics (including, e.g., fluid dynamics and free boundary problems), control and identification (including, e.g., distributed parameter systems) and computational methods of large-scale systems (including, e.g., fast solvers for partial differential equations). As pilot type projects research has been active in the areas of cellular and neural networks with applications in telecommunication.

The scientific work in the laboratory has been productive: one monograph has been written, two conference proceedings have been prepared, and 50 other publications, including journal papers, conference proceedings papers, manuscripts and reports have been published. Moreover, four doctoral theses and one licentiate thesis have been completed.

One of the most significant achievements in 1994 has been the foundation of Jyväskylä Graduate School in Computing and Mathematical Sciences (COMAS). It is a doctoral programme, jointly organized by the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, the Department of Statistics, and the Department of Mathematics at the University of Jyväskylä. Scientific computing is one of the four research programmes of COMAS. Currently, there are 14 doctoral theses and 12 licentiate theses in scientific computing under preparation. COMAS will increase these numbers.

The international collaboration has been active in 1994. We had 22 visitors and the members of the staff gave 17 presentations in conferences and colloquia abroad. We have 11 docents. Two of them come from the Helsinki University of Technology, one from the Technical Research Centre of Finland/Telecommunications and three from abroad. Moreover, professors Yu. A. Kuznetsov and J. Periaux, our part-time foreign professors, visited several times. Professors V. Rivkind and M. Rudnicki continued their long-term stay.

Two conferences were organized. They were the 5th Finnish Mechanics Days and the Workshop on Mathematical Methods in Material Sciences.

Our national sponsors have been the University of Jyväskylä, the Academy of Finland, TEKES (the Research Council of Technology), the Ministry of Education and some small enterprises as well as some research and cultural foundations.

Jyväskylä, December 1994
Pekka Neittaanmäki
