THE LABORATORY OF SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING
The laboratory was founded in January 1992
to provide surroundings and support for
researchers in the areas of applied mathematics
and computing
at the University of Jyväskylä.
The laboratory has about 40
employees including over 20 doctoral
students or post-doctoral researchers.
The main research areas are foundations of
computational methods (e.g., the finite
element method, domain decomposition
methods, nonsmooth and multiobjective
optimization), computational mechanics
and physics, control and identification,
computational methods of large-scale
systems, telecommunications and software engineering.
International collaboration
The international collaboration is considered
extremely important for the laboratory.
Annually, the laboratory is visited by about 40
researchers from abroad, not to
mention the Finnish visitors. The staff participates
actively international conferences and
colloquia and gives presentations.
Research projects
The main research areas of the Laboratory are:
- Foundations of computational methods
- Computational mechanics and physics
- Control and identification
- Computational methods of large-scale systems
- Telecommunications
- Software engineering
The different areas have a fairly common
mathematical background which makes the
communication possible also between projects
in different areas. Moreover, much effort has
been invested in the common computational
environment which on one hand reduces the
routine work in the projects, and on the other
hand makes it easier for the projects to
communicate with each other.
The active research projects of the laboratory
are described in the Annual Report 1997.
