Objectives of Short Course and Open Industrial Day – Introducing the Database Workshop

The need of advanced optimization software for single/ multiphysics design encourages an attempt to a confrontation of computational optimization results stored in a Database on carefully selected problems of industry and society.

Opening such a confrontation to all world scientists will allow a more general evaluation of uncertainties in Single/Multi Discipline MDO and will provide a reference to define useful validation guidelines for future design in industry and society.

Scientific Content of the Short Course

Innovative techniques for designing modern technological systemic products with maximum performance efficiency and safety, are now rapidly moving from research labs to industrial real and virtual platforms. To reach concurrently this level of excellence, emergent optimization methodologies require more and more robust and efficient software for daily use in industrial collaborative design environments.

This Short Course will consist of a broad review of theoretical to practical optimization including CAD systems, mesh quality, solvers and optimizers ranging from theoretical optimization, control and design concepts to real applications. It intends to provide the basic concepts and tools for single discipline and multidisciplinary optimization. The targeted applications originate from industry (Telecommunications, Aeronautics, Paper Machine Industry, Wind Energy, Civil Engineering, Structural & Acoustics Health Monitoring…) and society (Bio Engineering, Medical Applications & Environmental Problems).

The content of this Short Course is oriented towards young engineers and scientists recently involved in the field of multidisciplinary design as well as professional engineers looking for innovative numerical solutions of complex multi-criteria design optimization problems and have a significant educational impact in multidisciplinary system design.

Technical Content of the Open Industrial Day

The objectives of the Open Industrial Day will be two fold:

  1. to launch the Database Workshop in presenting test cases simulation and optimization for computation and present the structure of a Finnish Database on which test cases problems and computational data results will be installed for comparisons
  2. to discuss via presentations and a round table gathering internationally recognized senior experts of Academy, Industry and Governmental institutions the impact of innovative multiphysics software in industry and society for new digital product.

Objectives of this Database Workshop

  1. Propose to the scientific/industrial community involved in Design and Control problems test case analysis and optimization problems for multiphysics software validation.
  2. Gather a forum of international experts for evaluating by comparison of computerized data the efficiency and robustness of existing and new multidiscipline optimization software without and with uncertainties on selected test cases installed in a synchronized Finnish and US mirror Database.
  3. Provide industry and society reference test cases for validation of advanced software used to design their new digital complex products.
  4. Identify collaborative areas requiring additional R&D in Multi-criteria / Multidisciplinary Design Optimization.

A special session on the presentation of test cases for computation is scheduled during the Open Industrial Day while comparisons of computational data will be presented during the fall of 2009 in an FiDiPro event entitled “Database Workshop on the Validation of Computational Multiphysics Simulation and Optimization Software“
